Jo-Anne Kuchmak

Junior School Visual Art Teacher
How do you continue learning in your life? What is your professional passion?
I continue to learn in a variety of ways. The most typical way is that I enroll in courses outside of school. Currently I am working on earning a CAIS Leadership diploma, so for the past few years I have taken many new and exciting courses.

I also learn in other ways in my life. I enjoy learning with my son who is 8. We will often watch videos to help us learn something new like drawing, baking or sculpting. As well, I am also taking ski race training courses so that I can help coach and volunteer with my son’s ski racing team.

Besides the traditional ways of learning, I also learn by intentionally observing, asking questions, reading and trying new things.

I pursued a career in teaching because I honestly love all aspects of my profession. I am excited to teach, to listen, to watch and to be part of the development of so many amazing students. I hope I am able to help and inspire and enable growth in others. Teaching is a profession that embodies my whole heart.

What is one of your favourite interactions with students?
One of my favourite interactions with students are the moments when a student is proud of themselves. It can be in the studio when they have achieved something they weren’t sure that they would be able to do, the volleyball court when they finally get the “under-hand pass”, or when they share with me that they have overcome something that had been challenging. Being a part of their journey is a gift, and I am grateful for those “little” moments.

Favourite Thing about Working at CDS:
A favourite thing about working at CDS for me would have to be the community. We are very fortunate to have a big school with a small town, family feeling. Not all schools have this and it’s definitely a big piece of why I love working here.

Something You’ve Crossed off your Bucket List:
Something I have crossed off my bucket list would be jumping out of an airplane. I am deftly afraid of heights and jumping from high heights, yet I had always wanted to skydive. One day, I decided to just sign up, and once I did there was no turning back. It was terrifying and amazing!

Other than CDS, I Support … I support the Arts and am on a board for Street Art in Toronto. In the winter I volunteer with ski racing and the Newmarket Soccer Club. As a family (my son and my husband), we volunteer and “hang out” with children with Autism and we also support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Close to my heart as well is supporting youth in mental health and well-being.

Hometown: I grew up in what was once a very small town called Waterdown, but also spent weekends in Burlington and Toronto.

Also Known As (i.e. Nickname or other role you have): The students know me as Ms. K though my full name is Ms. Kuchmak.

Joined CDS in: I joined CDS in 2017.

Education: Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and B.Ed. from Western University, and soon a Diploma from the CAIS Leadership Institute
