Sarah Marshall

Middle School French Teacher
How do you continue learning in your life? What is your passion?
Professionally, I continue learning by watching French films, listening to French radio and music, chatting with my francophone friends and reading French novels. Outside of the teaching realm, I take on my role as learner in the kitchen on a weekly basis. I love trying out new recipes and exploring different combinations; baking and cooking are my de-stressors and my passions. I always love hearing about a new recipe!

What is one of your favourite interactions with students?
It is a challenge to pick out a favourite interaction with students because I find that there are special moments in every day that they create. Whether it is a burst of laughter in class to something we are chatting about, the lightbulb moment about French in our every day world, or their silent acceptance of me saying "sugars" all the time, the students at CDS make it an incredibly fun and welcoming environment to look forward to every day.

Favourite thing about working at CDS:
THE PEOPLE! I am so blessed to work in an environment where my colleagues are and Administration are supportive and challenge me to do my best. Every person that works at this school, from the office staff to teachers to caregivers to admin, adds something special and essential to our family that makes us thrive as a whole. It's this culture that then attracts incredibly talented and motivated families to our school that then results in an impressive and kind student body. All of this hard work on everyone's behalf makes CDS a second home for me.

Something you’ve crossed off your Bucket List:
I spent 6 years researching Indigenous cultures in Canada through stories and experiences, and I dedicated myself to ensuring that my teaching honoured and incorporated Indigenous perspectives even as a settler on this land. In the fall, I was able to scratch off participating and leading a smudging ceremony with my students. This was an important item on my bucket list because I am a firm believer in experience creates connection and I believe that the experience of smudging will create lasting impacts on how today's Grade 7s interact with Indigenous Peoples in future situations.

On a more personal note, if you ask my students what the next item is on my bucket list they would say, "To get a golden retriever puppy!"

Other than CDS, I support:
The preservation of local wetlands and wildlife. In the spring and summer months, my husband and I volunteer with the Green Toronto Community Stewardship Program in our neighbourhood. We spend every Wednesday evening in the Humber Bay Butterfly Habitat cultivating the natural wetland, ridding it of invasive species, picking up garbage and water and photo monitoring. It has been a great learning experience for us and we love being stewards of a park that we cherish so dearly!

Hometown: Often criticized for its Chemical Valley, I grew up on the sunny blue shores of Sarnia, Ont.

Also Known As: At school - Madame. In the online world and in my friend groups - (amateur) baker extraordinaire!

Joined CDS in: January 2016 and have loved it ever since.

Education:
Honours BA from Wilfrid Laurier University - Double Degree in English and North American Studies with a minor in French; M.Ed. University of Toronto OISE; Certificate for teaching Approche Neurolinguistic from Western University; French Specialist from York University
